Princess Charlotte's future is in the hands of King Charles - and she may even inherit a title

Princess Charlotte is King Charles's oldest granddaughter and later this week she turns nine years old - and when she was born her grandfather had a sweet wish for the youngster.

As well as being King, Charles holds many other important roles - including being a doting grandpa. The monarch has five grandchildren in total - the Prince and Princess of Wales's children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, as well as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's little ones, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Of course, as the oldest of the bunch, 10-year-old George's future is mapped out for him as King - but for Charlotte and Louis, things are a little less clear. However, Charles once made a sweet wish about what he hoped Charlotte would do when she was older - and it came just after she was born.

In May 2015, Charles, who was then Prince of Wales, was on a visit to his model town, Poundbury, in Dorset a few days after Charlotte's birth. He told well-wishers he had been hoping for a girl and described her as "beautiful". Joking about the future, he added: "I am thrilled.

I was hoping for a granddaughter – someone to look after me when I am very old." At the moment, Charlotte's official title is HRH Princess Charlotte of Wales - but it seems she could be bestowed another title when she is older - Princess Royal.

However, this wouldn't be until her father Prince William becomes King as it is traditionally given to the eldest daughter of the monarch. The current Princess Royal is the late Queen’s only daughter Princess Anne, who was given the title in 1987.

However, as the title is for life - it can only be passed to Charlotte following the death of Princess Anne. Royal expert and author of Prince Harry: The Inside Story, Duncan Larcombe, told TownandCountrymag.com: "The title of Princess Royal is traditionally bestowed on the eldest daughter of the monarch.

It is a title that remains for life, so Princess Charlotte will have to wait at least until the death of the current Princess Royal." The title was first introduced to mimic the French royal title of Madame Royale back in the 1600s.
